Can I Deduct My Home Cleaning if I Work from Home?

Working from home certainly has its perks.  You can usually set your own hours.  You can work in your jammies if you choose.  You have a lot of flexibility that you don’t have in a traditional office.  But it’s easy to get bogged down between cleaning and working, so cleaning and maid services can help.

When your office is inside your house, it can be easy to let the boundary between work and home get blurry.  Most employees leave the office at the end of the day, and the workplace stays behind until the next morning.  The interruptions from family or other chores during the workday are minimal.  Those who work from their residence know that it’s easy to drift back to the desk after dinner or move between the desk and the washing machine all day long.

The best way to enforce a separation between work and personal life when you work from home is to use a separate space for work and treat it like a business.  If you do so, many of the services (including home care cleaning services) you use for work become tax-deductible.  Most people realize that they can deduct their phone service if they work from their house, but did you know that you can also deduct cleaning and maid services?  This is how it works:

  • First figure out what portion of your home is used solely for business purposes. You can include a desk area or an office that is only used for work along with any storage area that is solely for business.
  • Calculate the square footage of those business-only areas.
  • Now figure out what percentage of your residence that business-only space makes up.  If your office is 10 percent of the space of your household, you can deduct 10 percent of your utilities, cleaning and maid services, and even your mortgage.

Check out a home care cleaning service or maid service in Delaware, and you’ll find that it helps you to separate your work space from family – and you can write it off at tax time.
