Cash only maid services – good or bad?

Let’s say that you’re looking for a new maid service online when you come across an advertisement for one that looks promising — before you get to the fine print that states, “Cash Payments Only.”  Should you quickly click back your search results and start looking for another housecleaning service, or continue on and contact the company? The answer here is: it depends.

With a cash only company, you might end up with more than you bargained for, in more ways that one. A legitimate maid service that is licensed, bonded, and who takes care of their workers, will take more than one type of payment. Some may even invoice you monthly, on top of their standard credit card, money order to check payments that are required upon service. A company that takes cash only could still be properly licensed, and may have been burned by slow paying clients, or those that paid with a bad check. They might also be new, and haven’t yet had a chance to set up their credit card system yet. It happens, so you need to question the service thoroughly before choosing.

On the other side of things, you could also get burned by a “cash only” cleaning service. If you pay in advance, the cleaners may not show up, having taken your money and run with it. Or, you might get maid service from a company that isn’t fully insured, so if something breaks, you are left without recourse. You could also end up with a cleaning service run privately by the cleaner herself or himself, who completes the job in record time and leaves your house sparkling and shining. This is why you need to do your research and ask about things like guarantees, bonding, licensing and whether or not employees are drug tested. A company that does things the right way will not accept only cash as a payment, and will have your best interests in mind.
