Disinfecting vs. Sanitizing

When it comes to house cleaning, it is important to understand the difference between disinfecting and sanitizing.  The two concepts are similar, but there are some important differences between the two:

  • Disinfecting is the deepest level of clean you can ask for.  This level of cleaning is about killing bacteria.  A disinfectant must be able to remove 99.9 percent of infection-causing bacteria.  It does not kill all viruses or spores, but it does work on most bacteria within five to 10 minutes. A disinfector has a higher kill rate of bacteria than a sanitizer does.
  • Sanitizing is one step below disinfecting on the house cleaning scale.  It takes only 30 seconds to kill a specific set of bacteria, although it may not kill all of the bacteria that actually cause illnesses.

Understanding the difference between these two concepts is important because it certainly does affect which kind of cleaning products you buy.  You want to do everything you can to keep your family safe from illnesses, and the only way to do this is by disinfecting your house rather than just sanitizing it.

You need a house cleaning company that also understands the difference between these two concepts because this means that they care about keeping your family safe.  There are a lot of disease-causing bacteria out there, but you do have the ability to protect yourself.

Of course both disinfecting and sanitizing do have a place in house cleaning.  In places like your kitchen where disinfecting really counts, it’s important to think about the difference.  But other parts of your home may be just fine with sanitization.  If you ever have a question about how both of these methods of cleaning are being utilized in your home, be sure to ask your house cleaning professional to explain when he or she uses each method.
